Let the Stars Read your Future
Name: Mariko 'Ari' Ohara
Age: 16, February 3rd
Made-up or Canon: Canon- Year of the Monkey
Face Claim: Chie Satonaka, Persona 4
History:
Mariko's birth came as the result of a drunken mistake between two teenage friends, leading to a shotgun wedding and a pretty swift divorce afterwards when it was clear a relationship would never work. Her grandparents moved both teenage mother and Mariko back to Perth, Australia (the hometown of her grandmother) with them shortly before the young girl turned three; and it was there that Mariko spent her childhood years.
As she grew, questions about her father began to plague her mind more often. Her mother and grandparents did not try to sidestep the truth, but the fact that her father lived in Japan only meant that Mariko wanted to go there herself, or bring him to Perth. When she was eight, she met him properly for the first time, when she visited Japan with her grandparents, but years of absence do not aid a relationship that never really existed.
Though Mariko was never considered to be part of the 'in-crowd' in school, she was popular enough to avoid trouble from the other kids, unless she went looking for it herself. Her closest friends were her hockey teammates, who were in the minority of people that not only embraced her fairly competitive nature, but encouraged it.
At the age of fifteen, the passing of her grandmother stirred the remaining three Oharas to move back to Japan in the hopes of a new beginning. Though reluctant at first to leave behind everyone she knew, Ari tried to look at the move positively. Upon returning, she contacted her father for the first time in years, hoping to at least maintain a somewhat friendly relationship between them; and signed herself up for her new school's hockey team. Eventually she was drafted into swimming as well, which she had not planned for but was happy to do- swimming reminded her of Perth, but then it had been something she did everyday, not something to compete in.
The exact moment her life changed passed without Mariko's notice, much to her annoyance later. Whilst rushing out of the door for school, she had quickly hugged her grandfather as he sat eating breakfast- as she did almost everyday- when she found herself far shorter, smaller, and in possession of fur and a tail. When they pieced things together later, the teenager was surprised to find how well her mother and grandfather seemed to take things, though their efforts to get Ari to transfer to a private all-girls school proved futile.

Sample RP:
"You'll be late again, Mariko" her grandfather called up, sighing and rolling his eyes as he heard the girl's door fly open as she ran for the bathroom, reappearing seconds later with a mouth full of mouthwash and bounding down the staircase, neatly dodging the elderly man and bursting into the kitchen.
Expertly gargling the minty liquid as she pulled on her shoes, Mariko moved to the sink. Slyly looking behind her to check her grandfather wasn't watching, she spat the stuff out. Moving for the fridge, she took a quick swig from the orange juice- a habit neither of the adults she lived with were overly fond of- and reached for the cupboard, pulling a chocolate bar out. Behind her, her grandfather cleared his throat in disapproval of the teenager's breakfast.
"Better than nothing, that's all I'm saying." Mariko scoffed, rapidly checking the contents of her bag one last time before closing it and pulling it over her shoulder. In the reflection of the microwave door, she checked her hair wasn't too out of place. "We're hitting the arcade after practice, so tell mum she doesn't need to worry about me for dinner, 'kay?" She turned to face her grandfather and grinned.
Usually, she would hug him goodbye before she left. That had been the norm for at least ten years, now. But not anymore. Instead, she merely nodded, and he did the same. They'd tried shaking hands to replace the hug at first, but that had been far too formal and felt downright weird for both of them. It was a little thing, but Ari missed it. "I'll see you later, Gramps." Dashing out of the door and down the pathway, she waved without looking back to her grandfather as he called his goodbye.
